Principal McGuire’s Message to Seniors

Scott McGuire, Principal

Dear Glen Burnie High School Seniors,

It has been almost five weeks since I last saw you. Maybe we spoke, maybe you heard me on the Morning Announcements, maybe we shook hands and talked about your classes or future plans, maybe we have never officially met. No matter how we know each other, know that I care about you and I am proud of what you have accomplished to get to this point in your education. Also know that I am deeply sorry for your loss and that you have had to endure this unprecedented global pandemic that has not just swept our community or our nation but our entire planet. No one could have predicted this, but it doesn’t diminish all the seniors’ accomplishments, hard work, and next steps that are going to be taken by such a talented and wonderful group of seniors moving forward. Our lives, our communities, our world has changed because of the coronavirus, but it won’t change how much all the parents, families, fellow Gophers, faculty, and our school community care about our seniors.

Yesterday, the State Superintendent, Dr. Salmon, announced that schools would remain closed until at least May 15, 2020. While I think that many of us in the back of minds thought it might happen, this date is beyond our scheduled Prom date. I wish that I could tell you that I have answers, but I don’t. I wish that I could tell you when and how we will celebrate your accomplishments, but for now I do not have answers. AACPS Leadership, including some High School Principals, have begun to brainstorm unique ways to celebrate you. Be assured that when decisions are made, they will be communicated to you. Also be assured that we will be reaching out to our Senior leaders to help us generate ideas and options for Glen Burnie High School.

For now, I still need you to finish strong. Work hard on your classes in the new online format. Stay in touch with your teachers, counselor, and administrator. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to someone. I know that as time passes and we remain at home and away from friends, it seems like you are losing out. Know that you are not. I look forward to celebrating the Class of 2020 with you. The most important thing you can do right now is to remain safe and healthy.

Finally, keep in mind that if you need food, it is available Monday – Friday at GBHS from 12:00pm – 12:30pm. I encourage you to take advantage of this service if you need it. Additionally, on Tuesday, April 21st we will be doing a curbside pickup of Graduation Announcements from 9:30am – 11:30am in the front of the school. This is only for Seniors who ordered Announcements. Please pick up your items at this time. This is Announcement distribution only, no cap and gowns. No one is to exit their vehicles and we will practice proper social distancing protocols. If you have any questions you may contact Lindsey Glamp at Jostens directly at: [email protected] or 443-822-8097.
