Are you interested in pursuing a new sport and want to learn or improve your skills? Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks has so many camps, programs, and sports to try. These activities are available in the spring and go throughout the summer. These programs are a fantastic way to form new relationships, learn or improve at a sport or activity, and have tons of fun while doing it.

One of the great programs is the Track and Field series, which is a perfect way to improve your endurance and increase your speed. The series takes place from June 4-August 13 and consists of nine track meets. It is at North County High School and costs $30 a series.

An interesting but vitally important class is the the Self Defense Class for Teenage Girls and Women. In today’s society, dangerous situations occur in everyday life and this class helps you stay aware, ready, and confident if you ever experience a attack. The class is a one day event and costs $35. The classes take place at Quarterfield Elementary School and North County Rec Center.

Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks also has a Teen Summer camp for upcoming 9th and 10th graders. It is called the North County Teen Camp and it takes place at the North Arundel Aquatic Center. While the camp starts there, the camp is action-packed and consists of activities such as golfing, bowling, swimming and skating. The group also goes to amusement parks. The camp is 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and held in one-week sessions.

If you are not interested in the camp or activities, Anne Arundel County has plenty of great parks within a 30-minute driving distance. Many of the local parks have hiking trails, playgrounds for the younger siblings, fields to play the sport of your choosing, and more. Some of the great parks in our area include Downs Park, Fort Smallwood Park, Kinder Farm Park, and Quiet Waters Park. These parks have a $6 entry fee per vehicle, but it is very cheap for a great day of fun in the sun.

On March 20-22, all local parks will offer free entry to commemorate the founding of Maryland. It is called Maryland Day Weekend and you can see additional info at www.marylandday.org/.

Lastly, Anne Arundel Recreation and Parks are having Summer Concerts starting in May and going through August. All you have to do is bring your family or friends, blankets or lawn chairs, some snacks or picnic dinner and you will have a great summer evening listening to local music.

In May, every Sunday from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. The Hatton-Regester Green Gazebo in Severna Park will have music concerts.

In June, the summer concert series is at Downs Park in Pasadena. It is every Sunday from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. It features bands, Appaloosa, Back Pages Band, and Summer Knights.

July and August has many more music groups to choose from and all take place at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis. The concerts are every Saturday in July and August, and are from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.

Lastly on Labor Day Weekend, Quiet Waters Park is having a 30th Anniversary Celebration. To celebrate, the famous Annapolis Symphony Orchestra is coming on Sunday, September 6th starting at 5:30 p.m.
