2017 was a successful year for the private aerospace manufacturer and space transport service company SpaceX, which was able to complete eighteen out of eighteen successful  launches, as well as fifteen out of fifteen first stage recoveries.

This year SpaceX will be focusing on the highly anticipated Falcon Heavy, which will further test its rockets by trying to perfect their reusability, but the first upcoming event of the new year will be the Zuma mission which will have SpaceX use it’s Falcon 9 Friday, January 5, 2018, at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. the rocket will be carrying a satellite by the name Zuma, a top-secret US government Satellite, into orbit.

Little is known about the Zuma satellite, other than that it was made by Northrop Grumman for the US Government and that it would be bound for low-Earth orbit in SpaceX’s Zuma Mission. The mission was planned for mid November of last year but the Falcon 9’s payload fairing, the cap of the rocket that’s supposed to protect the payload during its dynamic launch environment, had set back the plans for weeks, eventually drawing it back to January 5th.

On the 5th, the rocket will be launching starting at 8 p.m. and finishing at 10 p.m. EDT on Friday. SpaceX will be able to move on to performing it’s test flight of the Falcon Heavy’s boosters, which will also be launched at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station later in the year. The Falcon Heavy had been tested in December, and it would be used later on. An exact date of the Falcon Heavy flight has not been released yet, but it is expected that following the Zuma mission, the test flights will probably be seen around late January or late February.
