On November 25th, 2016 Fidel Castro, a very prominent figure in Cuba’s revolution, passed away. In fact, Fidel Castro led Cuba in the revolution for many years. From 1959 to 1976 he served as the prime minister of Cuba. Then from 1976 to 2006 he served as the president of Cuba. In total, he was in power for 47 years and his successor was his brother.

So, as you can imagine the death of such an important political figure can result in a lot of different reactions. The Cuban citizens expressed the most diverse range of reactions. Some mourned the death of their (figurative) father, as others rejoiced and threw parties in the streets. Many gathered at Revolution Square in Havana; some just people come to say goodbye with their families while others went on school trips orchestrated by the government. Miami, Florida expressed a very different tone when the news broke out. There was an outbreak of excitement and celebration as many of the residents in  Southern Florida are Cuban refugees and their families.

President elect Donald Trump voiced his opinion when he heard the news. Trump stated, “If Cuba is unwilling to make a better deal for the Cuban people, the Cuban/American people and the US as a whole, I will terminate deal”. This definitely raises the uncertainty in the lives of Cuban residents.
Even though many people had different opinions on how Fidel Castro chose to run Cuba, they cannot deny that he has greatly affected Cuba and its people whether it was for the good or bad.
