America alone has racked up a miraculous two trillion dollars in our under the table economy. This amount of cash unreported to the government is unbelievable to say the least, but this number also includes the large amount of drugs being sold on street corners all across the country, because in a technical sense, that is still a form of income that is unreported to the government.Dope slinging aside, a fair sized portion of that two trillion dollars is hard labor performed by the citizens of your very own, United States.

It’s commonplace for people to collect money on the side during recessions but the money being earned and lacking of records to show for it has doubled since the last known recession in the United States. Working under the table is seen as corrupt to our government, but has a large appeal to your everyday citizen. Typically speaking, this kind of work will grant you cash instantly leaving taxation behind. This alone is a temptation too good to pass up if you’ve looked at how much money is stripped from your paycheck in taxes. Not only is it appealing to the worker, but the employer won’t need to worry about any form of healthcare, insurance, or vacation. This results in the employer saving money. However, it’s the contrary for the worker, you can really get screwed over. If you are injured on a job, you will not find yourself receiving compensation.

Shifting this to students who are finding themselves working in order to either have some extra money, or attempting to put themselves through college. How will working under the table affect them? The idea seems flawless until you begin filling out forms that ask for your total earnings. You could put “$0,” but then technically you’d be lying, which could lead you into some legal trouble granted anyone were to find out. This is a common occurrence when filling out paperwork for things like grants, or student loans. It doesn’t look too good if you have zero income, and are applying for free money from the government. If you are working under the table or on the side, and have a regular job to go with that, you’re playing it safe. Having said that, self employment is completely valid, you’ll just want to make sure everything you’re doing is legal to keep yourself from running into some obstacles down the road.
